pokes.

this past week was my second at the swedish outpatient diabetes counseling center. that meant a couple of things: firstly, i knew the basics of the neighborhood enough to be able to get some good exploring in during my lunch break on the sunny days, of which we had a few!

what a way to pass the time while waiting for a bus! i too was soaking up the sunshine while sipping on a half price starbucks frappuccino.

secondly, that meant that i spent three days pretending to be a diabetic, i.e. poking my finger to test my blood sugar 4 times every day and giving myself a shot of fake insulin (saline solution) every night. i had to eat a carbohydrate balanced diet, counting up the carbs and spacing them out. testing my blood sugar was interesting, i've always been kind of curious. and giving myself a saline "insulin" shot every night wasn't that terrible, but i certainly am thankful that i don't have to do it for the rest of my life!

bedtime shot time- yikes!

the kit- a diabetic's constant companion.

class got cancelled today, which is a treat. i spent the morning walking and jogging at lincoln park, until the wind got so fierce that i felt like i was walking sideways to stay standing. it certainly doesn't feel like may here at all because it's still in the 40's and 50's and wet. after getting some odds and ends done at home, i headed to starbucks to read and write emails for a little while, it's nice to get out of the house. and soon, off to run errands!

nothing too exciting here :)

love,
tracey

  1. I learned how to give insulin shots this semester! Unfortunately we were not allowed to practice on ourselves, only on fake arms and hot dog weenies. Lame.
