five clues, a ring, and the rest of my life.

To all my far away friends and family who haven't gotten to hear the story in person, here it is! The story of May 26, 2012.

8:30am- I had had plans to meet up with Katy to celebrate my birthday on the 26th for a couple of weeks, so when she texted me at 10pm the night before to confirm, I wasn’t suspicious at all. I headed over to Bakery Noveau as planned, we got treats, sat outside in the sun, and talked, mostly about the trip to Colorado and life in general. After all of that she asked me what my plan was for the day. I mentioned community group, lunch, an open afternoon, and a birthday date with Craig that night. (I didn’t mention that I was suspicious that he might propose. I had kept that entirely to myself, not talking about the supposed “birthday party” that he was planning to anyone...I didn’t want to dig up any details I shouldn’t.) Then she said that since last year’s birthday was kind of crazy, she wanted to do something extra special for this year, something unique to me. At that point she pulled out an envelope labeled Clue #1. She explained that everything I thought I was doing that day I actually wasn’t doing, and that my whole day had been planned for me for a while. I should go home and put on something that I was comfortable walking around in, someone would pick me up and take me where I needed to go, and that’s how my whole day would go. My suspicious were confirmed, and I was so excited and somewhat shocked that it was actually happening that my hands were shaking when I opened the clue: “Roses are red, violets are blue, what is your favorite flower? This is your first clue.” We took a picture, and then I headed home.

9:00am- When I walked in the door my roommates were grinning, sure enough they were in on the whole deal. As I suspected, Dana (who loves flowers more than anyone I know) was all ready to take me to the Pike’s market. Her dad drove us, and we found it hilarious when he pulled aside into an empty parking lot for a flour mill. I was confused, Dana was laughing, and he told us to get out.

He drove away, and after a minute or so Dana looked at me and said “he better come back soon, this isn’t where we’re supposed to be!” Sure enough, he pulled back around the block and we got in and headed to the market. We had plenty of time to pick out flowers, I went back and forth between poppies and peonies, but in the end, settled on poppies.

After that, we walked through the market and over to the park that overlooks the water and the 99, explored the antique mall, browsed the map store, and admired a store that sold nothing but umbrellas. I suggested that we go get coffee at Starbucks, which little did I know was the very spot we needed to end up, I was simply indulging my coffee addiction.

When we got there Dana gave me the next clue: “You have just spent an hour on the search for your favorite flower. Now you get to see me, the third of “then there were three.” I am sure you have a hunch, but I love you a bunch! Now let’s get some ___”  I look over and there’s Emily in her car across the street.

11:30am- I run over and hop in, leaving my flowers with Dana (they made an appearance again later). We head to lunch at Wild Ginger, and share a main dish and some spring rolls, all of which were delicious. It was fun to just laugh and talk, thought I was having a hard time stringing two sentences together because my mind was all over the place! We finished up and decided to take a walk around the block, wandering through a great little shop called Paper Hammer.

On our way out of the parking garage we spotted a woman walking around with a giant unicorn head, only in Seattle. While we were driving Emily gave me my next clue: “Normally you see me in Trail Lake, but California will have to do.” I was totally stumped, because the only Trail Lake I could think of was in Texas, and I was stuck on Craig being from California. Only when we got back to West Seattle did I remember that the main street in town is California Avenue...and then I suspected Victoria.

1:30pm- Emily and I walked down the street for a block before turning aside to a nail salon, and sure enough, there she was! Everyone in the place was thoroughly enjoying watching me be ridiculous in my excitement.

We sat there and did what we do whenever we're together: got all our nails done (which was funny, because I did all of mine the day before, wanting them to look nice JUST in case) and talked for a few hours. When we were all done, she handed me my next clue: “Trace, we hope you have had a great day so far, it is not yet over! You have till 5 to get all dressed up fancy. Your next surprise will pick you up then. Who could it be?”

3:30pm- So we headed back home with an hour and a half to kill. I was so nervous waiting for Craig to get to the house, I couldn’t sit still and didn’t know what to talk about. I had spent the day with Emily and Victoria, and it wasn’t like there was really anything else to say! I finally decided that we had to do SOMETHING, so we played cards. A few minutes later I get a text that says “I’m here to date you!” I was so glad to finally be going, it was a weird day of knowing how it would end, and being ready for that part of it to start! I joked with Victoria that I would get in the car and we would have nothing to talk about, and sure enough, Craig and I were both so nervous that that was exactly what happened. It was almost like a first date all over again! Comical. I ended up talking the whole drive about everything that happened that day, not really quite sure whether to assume that he knew details or not. I pretended he knew nothing, for the sake of having something to say, but I was still having a hard time putting two sentences together because my mind was racing. We headed to Alki and pulled into the Salty’s parking lot. After we finally got seated (in the best seats in the house, which I found out later Craig had requested) I had to read the menu at least 4 times before taking anything in at all. When something finally registered enough that I thought it sounded good, that’s what I decided on: crab stuffed salmon over charred tomato risotto. Craig had halibut with couscous, and both plates were some of the best food we’ve had together.

Once we started eating we remembered how to talk to each other, thank goodness! Craig mentioned that he didn’t talk to my mom that day, after they had been trying to connect for a couple of days. He tried to throw me off his tracks by saying “I just hope I get to talk to her in the next couple of weeks!” After we finished eating he suggested our usual after dinner plans, a walk in Lincoln park and coffee at CafĂ© Ladro. I agreed, I wasn't about to try and suggest any plans other than what he had in mind. At Lincoln we parked and got out of the car, and then Craig paused to send a text message, with the off handed comment “Sorry, Pastor Thomas just got back into town and needs to know what’s going on tomorrow. He keeps asking me a ton of questions.” (I suspected that text was not at all to Thomas, and read something along the lines of “just parked, about to start walking.” Yep.) We walked out to the point, where there happened to be an open bench, so we sat down. We got awkward again, made small talk, then sat quietly. At that point I had mostly calmed down; we were there, and I knew what was coming. At one point I looked off to the side and he shifted a little to fidget with his pocket. After a deep breath (or 4 or 5) he finally started talking. Several endearing sentences later: "So, I lied to you today. I did talk to your mom. I’ve spent the day on the phone with friends and family, talking with them, being encouraged by them. Because the truth is, I want to marry you, and spend the rest of my life proving to you every day that I love you.” And it goes without saying what came next. After I said yes (and he responded with a "Yesssssssss!!!" of his own) he looked over his shoulder and a photographer came out of the bushes and came over to take some photos. I couldn’t stop smiling or looking at my finger! We sat there for a few minutes, just enjoying it. We talked through all my suspicions- bought the ring last Saturday? Yep. Originally intended to propose on my birthday? Yep. After a few minutes we walked back to the car where I got my final clue: “To the couple that will soon be married, at 7:30pm the “smurf house” will be full of bubbly, sweets, and friends (who cannot wait to party in your honor)- join us!” And so the rest of the evening was spent with good friends, celebrating with sweet treats and drinks, photos and stories!

And that's the story of the day that marks the beginning of a life with the man who is so much evidence of God's grace to me!

planning.

last weekend i had the pleasure of planning all the food for my roommate jacqui's bridal shower. i love planning appetizers, sweet treats, and parties in general, especially for people i know. (next up: planning a party for my birthday! maybe. this month is looking pretty loco.)

we kept it classy with fruit skewers and a veggie tray, cured meats and fancy cheeses, chips and guacamole, carrot cake and homemade  vanilla ice cream, and mimosas. all of jacqui's favorites!

the turnout was great! we played bridal bingo, where each person created their own bingo board based on gifts they thought she might open, and played as she made her way through the stack. my gift contribution: kitchen gadgets, what else?

it was a delightful afternoon full of showering jacqui with love. (and food and gifts.) the big day is only 2 weeks away!

bridesmaids and the bride to be!

trio.

the other day i woke up totally inspired. there were a few recipes that i had been wanting to try, and so i decided to pull out the stops and give them a run.

the first: blue cheese crackers. i've tried this recipe before, but with a combination of mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. the blue cheese ones were ten times better, but i think that's because of the sharp flavor, as well as my better measuring skills. (sometimes i get a little haphazard with my estimations when i'm trying out a recipe for the first time.) if you love cheeze-its, these are certainly worth a try. the recipe is here. SUPER easy, and way better for you than the processed and preserved kind i'm sure.

the second: carrot cake cookies. i had some leftover cream cheese icing from the carrot cake i made for jacqui's bridal shower last weekend, and a while back i had found a recipe for carrot cake cookies. perfect combination, so i decided to give it a try. my roommates especially loved them, and they were gone within 48 hours.

the third: whole wheat cinnamon bagels. i've always wanted to try making bagels, the whole process of boiling bread has always been intriguing to me. i settled on a recipe from smitten kitchen, one of my favorite food bloggers.

letting the sponge rise, with the help of a heating pad.

after adding the rest of the ingredients and kneading, i poked the holes.

you let them rise for 20 more minutes, then see if they past the "float test." if they fail, like the sad one above, you let them rise some more.

passed the swim test. now, the tray goes into the fridge for the flavor to develop, anywhere from 3 to 48 hours. i left mine for 24. then you boil them, 1 minute on each side, then bake 10 minutes.

after that, i brushed butter on them and sprinkled on cinnamon and sugar.

and you end up with these beauties!

they look kind of like donuts.

delightful.

i also wanted to try making homemade peppermint patties, as well as blondies made with a white bean base. another time though, a gal can only play in the kitchen for so long in one day before she has to get some real things done too.

preparing your minds.

memorizing scripture is not something i'm good at. i know the importance of it, i know the command to do it, i know the joy in recalling it, i know the purpose in reciting it. it just always seems to be something that falls to the back burner. (which, if we're honest, shows how much i actually believe the things that i know. praise the Lord for his sanctifying work in me.) i'll get ambitious about it for a while, write out a ton of verses on cards and carry them around and start to memorize them, but it always seems to happen that they end up in my desk drawer when i go through and clean out my purse.

regardless of all my failed attempts, it's something that i always WANT to do, and by God's grace, will improve at over the course of my life.

currently i'm memorizing 1 peter. i breezed through 1 peter chapter 1, because i memorized that passage in the summer of 2010, walking back and forth from pine cove woods, where i slept, to the pine cove main office, where i worked for 11 weeks. i chose that passage because it corresponded with the staff bible study that i attended every wednesday night. it takes a lot of diligence to memorize scripture for me, so that summer i decided to dedicate all my walking time to scripture alone. it wasn't the first time i've tried that tactic, and it's always been a blessing. the summer i studied abroad in spain i dedicated all my walking (30 minutes to and from class, 45 minutes to and from the beach) to prayer. not planning, not music, strictly prayer. and that summer i learned so much about the power of persistent prayer.

anyway, i'm memorizing 1 peter. at this point, i'm not sure if i'll do the whole book or just parts of it, i guess we'll see. but today when i was going through chapter 1, verse 13 caught my attention.

"therefore, PREPARING YOUR MINDS FOR ACTION, and being sober minded, SET YOUR HOPE FULLY ON THE GRACE that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ."

preparing your minds for action. what does that even mean?

God reached down his hand into my life and saved me for a PURPOSE, not just so that i alone would be His. we are called, as His people, to be on mission. we are called to ACTION. to be proclaiming the good news that Jesus has come to REDEEM us. he has paid the price for our sins with his blood so that we don't have to pay for it with an eternity in a very real place called hell. at salvation, we are filled with the Holy Spirit, which enables us to live out this purpose, to know and understand God, and to become more obedient to him.

this includes furthering his mission, of which we are a part. the mission isn't solely to save tracey. the mission is to defeat satan, with the ultimate purpose that God would receive the glory due to him. and i just happen to GET to be a part of that, by being on mission in my community, whether that is with my roommates, my church, the impoverished neighborhoods 10 miles away, or the ends of the earth. in the mars hill kids ministry we talk about how God is on a rescue mission, and Jesus is our rescuer. our response to this epic rescue is an overflow of thanksgiving, and an eager desire to tell everyone. (at least that is the appropriate response, apart from the fact that we still are fleshly beings with sinful tendencies who mess up and get distracted from our purpose ALL THE TIME.)

as such, it is important to be equipped. ultimately, God has given us all we need for life and godliness (2 peter 1:3), and that is important to know. memorizing scripture doesn't get us into heaven or fulfill our purpose, neither does going to church or reading books. what these things DO do, however, is help us stand ready to speak truth and love others. they help us live out our mission in an effective way, so that ultimately more people can know truth, and God can be more glorified.

and this is where preparing our minds comes in. fill them with scripture. talk about how God has been faithful and good. pray. "set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ." fight for those things that are of eternal value.

because in that, there is true purpose.

skateboards and sunshine.

this weekend felt like summertime. it's only april! i'm pretty sure we didn't get weather like this until july last year. i certainly took advantage of it: on saturday after community group craig and i met up with the reeds and we all went on a little sunny adventure at the skate park.

i've never been to a skate park...something about private school fort worth suburban culture. crossing new things off my list!

katy, ransom and i picked a spot in the grass to soak up some sunshine as we watched the guys ride their boards, looking like twins. craig taught me how to ride (i'll post a picture sometime), by which i mean i can now successfully stand up on a skateboard, maintain my balance, and steer (for the most part). all on flat ground of course! i left the ramps and bowls to them. after they got tired and we got hot (since when is 70 degrees hot??) we headed back to the reeds house for dinner. homemade burgers on homemade buns with all the fixins.

it's true, when the sun comes out in seattle, everyone drops everything to enjoy it. after church on sunday i headed out to mars hill bellevue to join craig for the staff barbeque...outside in the sun (surprised?). up here, barbeque=burgers. i still get tricked. deep in my heart, "barbeque" will always mean meat smothered in spicy sweet sauce and cooked on the grill for large amounts of time. it was a great afternoon, topped off by coming home to find all three of my roommates on a blanket in our backyard, eating pineapple and sipping wine spritzers. i promptly joined them, until the time of day necessitated actual productivity, such as cooking dinner and doing laundry.

such a sweet weekend with people who are dear to me!

until next time,

the ants go marching on.

well march was a busy month! i can't believe it's already almost half way through APRIL. or that i haven't written in 6 weeks. whoops.

we have a huge dry erase calendar that we all write our schedules on so, as roommates, we are clued in on each other's lives a little bit. we like to get creative sometimes:

last month's title: the ants go MARCHing on.
this month's title: APRIL showers bring...more showers.

this is seattle, after all. although this past week has been the warmest and sunniest we've seen yet, which gives me hope that summer might actually come before mid-july!! boy, that would be a treat.

these past couple months have flown by in a frenzy of babysitting, cooking, spending time with good friends, and FINALLY getting a job. i'll be starting to take on some dietetic counseling hours at a private practice here in west seattle in july, and all signs point toward certainty that i'll also be working on a pilot for a weight management program starting in may. in total, 40-45 hours per week!! i've been doing a lot of reading and research in preparation, hence my absence from the blogging world.

i've been pretty amazed by the grace of it all. both of these job opportunities basically fell into my lap, and all i can do is be thankful. i've applied for dozens and dozens of jobs in the past many months, and neither of these two was one of them. i found both (or they found me) through connections that i have through my current job and through church. not by coincidence, God has been showing me how i'm hesitant to accept the grace of others because i'm prideful and want to be able to do it all on my own, i don't want to be indebted. i want to earn the things that i receive, an idea that couldn't be more opposite from the definition of grace. it's pretty obvious that i in no way deserve these jobs. i was talking about it the other day and off-handedly said "all i did was go to school and work hard in my internship and be polite and respect my preceptors." that is true, but those are irrelevant in the bigger picture. God is so much BIGGER that that. regardless of if i had done those things or not, He is still sovereign and still provides, often in ways or times that we might not expect. and we cannot mess that up. it was His plan that i would search hard for jobs, go through several months of figuring i would never find one, and get turned down time and time again. and through that season, learn to rely on those around me, and understand what things do (Jesus) and do not (work, money, status, schedule, credentials) define who i am. and even as i hoped for a job, i was blessed to be "forced" to do the things that i want to do (i mean, a gal has to so SOMETHING with her day!) instead of always doing the things that i've always felt like i should be doing. i've done plenty of things that i love (cooking, crafting, reading, serving, being outside), and invested in a lot of relationships, and probably not really made much progress in the eyes of society. but this past year hasn't been wasted. it wasn't a gap year, a waiting period until i got a job and then real life could begin. it was a year of learning what i love, and of starting to (because i think we learn our whole lives) understand grace, grace that the Father poured out through my family and friends.

and so for the next month, i will soak. it. up. because a full time job will bring its own challenges and lessons, different from those of unemployment. i'm excited! but also a little sad, because this past season has been such a blessing, both in obvious and very sneaky ways.

and maybe with a little bit more routine there will be a little bit more blogging too :)
